Seven
He woke up on his birthday with balloons and a bagel. Breakfast in bed was what he wanted and breakfast in bed is what Dad delivered. When I went to snap his photo he groggily asked if he could do 'this' and raised his fingers like so (top photo). No matter how Dad tried to get him to put down his thumb and hold up his index and middle finger he wouldn't. That's just not how he counts. It is one of the tiny traits he picked up living in Italy that hasn't slipped away. (Don't believe there is a difference? Take the cultural test.)
Afterwards he found the tower of presents (stomp rocket, angry birds card game, Where the Sidewalk Ends, a pillow pet, Transformers, more games...). And then it was time for the Birthday movie madness. The inside of a theater does not allow for photos which is probably a blessing as it was insanity trying to sit the kids (and keep them seated) so that we could do a count for pizza and drinks (and wine..I did mention that we went to a Cinema and Draft House, right?)
The birthday bash will culminate with today's Mardi Gras party in his classroom. The purple, yellow, and green cupcakes are at the ready and the beads and masks are waiting in the car.
Happy Birthday, Mahlon. I Love You (to the Moon-- and Back!)

Ah, happy belated birthday! Hard to believe SEVEN is already here! Sounds like he had a great day. What movie did you guys see? Nice with the Mardi Gras party too. ;)
wow wow wow wow, SEVEN???? NO.WAY. He is SO handsome. He looks like you, Karen, but he REALLY reminds me of your brothers. Do people tell you this? I know another little boy about to be 7 in April who would love to get together SOMEDAY to play Legos.... :) and his Mama who wouldn't mind some wine with her old friend!!!!
LOVE this post. You are so much fun.
XoXo,
Jenny
Happy Birthday, Mahlon!
I noticed the fingers in the first photo instantly; it is indeed one of those subtle things that says something about you...like the way you hold a fork and knife. Good for him for holding on to it!
Thanks for the king cake tip. Another way to cheat is with canned cinnamon rolls. Ironically, when we had some highly celebrated Randazzo's king cake here this week, my daughter declared mine to be the best; I use a simple Fleischman's yeast recipe that was printed in the Picayune. Her cousins thought she was nuts...Whose mom makes King Cake????
