Battle Board

I scooped up a wood serving tray at Ikea yesterday with a 'battle board' project in mind. Initially I thought I would use a rimmed cookie sheet but they didn't have any. I was inspired to make it after watching my 6 year old boy play with his army men on the map coasters I made a few weeks back. I'm sure you can piece together how it was made. 1 Tray + 1 Map (in our case a free tourist map of Rome I had hanging around). Mod Podge the bottom of the tray, attach map, mod podge the top. I tried to let my guy do most of it so he felt like it was really his. My hope is that now when I say "clean up" he doesn't get upset about destroying the entire battle to put his men back in their jar (a recycled peanut butter jar that works great for the little Civil War army guys he was gifted). Instead he can just slide the entire tray under the couch and be ready to roll again when the time comes. It's only been one day and the board has seen some use... but he seems to use the board and also areas outside of it. I was thinking this would make a really cute gift for someone. Especially if you got a map from a Civil War battlefield and included a bag of army men. Or maybe it's not even PC for kids to play army any more? Oh what do I know! If nothing else at least he'll know how to get to the forum...

I'm sharing this post over at Under the Table and Dreaming's Sunday Showcase just cause I haven't in a while!

I love this idea, Karen. I think Army leaders would be proud of you, teaching him so young like that ;)

I know Dana, I really should training him in the art of Radiology... like paste a skeleton to the board with movable tumors.. that might be moving into tiger mom territority though.. something I am far from!

That's awesome. You've got a strategy board game right there. Good job!

This is a great idea! I have a 10 year old who all of the sudden has taken to playing with the traditional plastic green army men. So I put sand in a rectangular plastic bin with a lid so we can keep it outside. He uses cinammon sticks from the dollar store to make trenches/walls and mounds up the sand. Where can you find the mini army set like yours?
