Roll With It, Baby...

Another birthday party, another invite with "no gifts, please."

As if.

As if I could possibly go empty handed to a 5 year-old's and her sister's (2 yr old) birthday party. Does that translate into, ran right out and got the perfect gift? Um, no. More like a breezy thought, oh I'll just whip something up... And then the days passed and I put it out of my mind.

Thus, in the final hours, the crayon roll was created from scraps of material and an unopened crayon box we -thankfully- had on hand. I didn't have interfacing (?) but the green material (second photo) was rather thick so I thought it made up for it. It sort-of-kind-of-but-not-really did. On the second roll I added some batting which resulted in a big fat roll. Now I have one roll too small and one roll too big. I'm feeling a bit like Goldy Locks but without the third, perfect roll to turn to. I also lacked the right ribbon for the fat roll and had to use some really wide stuff. (Justifications to self: "It's more proportional this way"/ "It's better to practice tying bows with.") I had wanted to use one of those sliding do-hickey-thingy-majigs as a closure. The kind you can pinch and slide along the ribbon to open, but those were MIA in my craft box as well. My crayon rolls are ric-rac-less too. I just didn't have the energy/patience to put it on.

In the end, this was one gift project I just rolled with. (Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

I used the crayon roll tutorial from Skip to my Lou. She has tons of great tutorials for handmade gifts on her site.

I absolutely *adore* this idea, and just need an excuse to make one!! (Oh yeah, and I need to convince my son to stop eating crayons!!) Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, I made a ton last christmas for my nieces and nephews. Right now is a good time to pick up crayons too since all the back to school stuff is out and on sale. My daughter doesn't eat them, but she peels the wrappers and leaves them all over the house-- which is great b/c what I really need is more house work ;)

Hey Karen,
Ian just busted out the crayon belt last night! In our house it doubles as a bullet belt, but last night it was used for creating lots of cool pictures... and not for fighting bad guys!
